Taking a break
What do you do when you have something that is working well?
The answer, as any red blooded male worthy of the title will tell you, is to take it apart and probably break it.
Whether it be a clock or a car or anything in between, there is always that nagging feeling that it can be improved upon. In the case of a car, maybe a tweak or two might make it go a bit faster. In the case of a clock, maybe a tweak or two make stop it going a bit faster. There is always that nagging itch at the back of the mind that whatever it is, it can be improved with a judicious tweak or a belt of a hammer.
This site is running well. That’s why I am going to break it.
It has a little problem that doesn’t affect it now but will probably affect it quite seriously in the future. I tried building a duplicate site from scratch and the problem disappeared which was irritating because it told me that the problem was fixable but it still didn’t tell me the cause. So the only recourse is to do the same with the live site.
It’s a bit pointless writing this little explanation, because if you go looking for the site and it isn’t there, then you won’t be able to read this. On the other hand, if you can read this then maybe I haven’t started yet, or I am in the middle and the page is only temporarily visible or maybe I have finished and the site is back up.
Enough of this.
Time to roll up my sleeves and get dirty……..

Three hours later……
Fuck! Short of rebuilding the site from scratch which means redesigning the whole thing from scratch, I’m stumped.
Maybe I’ll try again sometime…..
Okay, I’ll leave this here comment just to see if you’ve started yet. If it posts then perhaps you haven’t. If it doesn’t post then perhaps you have. But we won’t know until I attempt to post it.

So let’s just call it a “Schrodinger’s Comment” shall we?
I started but it finished me. Maybe I’ll convert the site to a Schrodinger version? It will exist until someone tries to view it, at which point it will cease to exist.Â
Doesn’t that already happen on a semi-regular basis though?
Sorry, couldn’t resist.
It probably does. Quite a few times I have gone to look for it unsuccessfully when I know it’s there.
I used to pull things apart and try and improve them (20 or more years ago), but now I just leave well alone…
Depends on what it is. I have given up on cars, but I like
breakingfixing old clocks. To err is human, but to really cock up requires a computer.

As a retired IT man (a systems programmer way back in ’75) I know that to be the truth.
Very true. But in fairness, computers would work perfectly provided they are kept well away from humans.
