My interest in computers is rapidly waning.
This laptop is annoying me. Websites are annoying me. I’m easily annoyed these days.
I noticed a while back that my machine is becoming inordinately slow. Try and run a programme, any programme, and it took an age to start. This was getting nearly as bad as Windoze. I also noticed that when I shut the thing down it would suddenly fill the screen with endless lines that flashed past too quickly to read.
Yesterday, I got a message to say my disk was full!
Maybe I should mention that Linux is divided up into parts where basically all my own files are kept on one “disk” while Linux itself is on another “disk”. It was the latter one that was full. This shouldn’t happen unless I installed a ton of shit, which I hadn’t. Fuck!
I did a check and discovered that the problem was that the space was filling up with log files but I didn’t know which files I could safely delete and anyway there were hundreds of them. Drastic measures were called for. I reinstalled Linux.
That fixed the slowness problem as Linux now had loads of space for itself. But the problem was going to happen again in time. I had to find the cause. Maybe it had something to do with those lines of code that I couldn’t read because they were too fast? I got my camera ready, pointed it at the screen and shut down Linux. I managed to photograph the lines as they shot past. Geronimo! I could see what was happening.
It transpired that it had found some problem or other and had fixed it. But it fixed it dozens of times. And every time it fixed whatever it was it made a bigger file.
I told it to stop writing fucking useless files.
That seems to have worked. Linux now quietly shuts down.
Now only websites are annoying me.
