I am not normally one to snigger at other people’s misfortunes.
I did have a bit of a chuckle this morning though.
It all started when a woman went for a walk in the Wicklow Mountains. Fair play to her, says I, she couldn’t have chosen a finer place to stretch her legs.
I am quite familiar with those mountains [seeing as I live on ’em] and there are a couple of factors to watch out for when taking a stroll. The main thing is that they are wet. It doesn’t matter how long it is since the last rain, they are always wet and boggy and consequently they are slippery underfoot. They are crawling with bog holes, hidden little traps for the unwary and they are always slippery. So if you are going to walk there, you must expect a bit of slipping and sliding, or even a headlong plunge into a bog.
Our woman friend seems to have been blindly unaware of what she was doing though, as she slipped and fell.
Being the modern age, she of course sued. There is nothing like a bit of free cash if you can come up with a nice feeble excuse? Again, being the modern age where we must all be treated like delicate eggshells, she won. Forty fucking thousand yoyos! Not bad for a stumble?
However, the case was appealed and she lost the lot. Not only did she lose the lot but has to pay costs as well. She was firmly told that if you are going for a walk, you should look where you are fucking walking and that if you fall, it’s your own fucking fault.
Frankly I am delighted. It is a blow for common sense. It is a blow against the compo-culture that is rife across the uncivilised world.
Once upon a time, we took responsibility for our own actions. If we tripped, we picked ourselves up and carried on. Now of course someone has to be sued if we trip. Seeing as apparently anyone can sue for any imagined slight it means we all have to take out insurance against these money grubbers. And because insurance costs have to be factored into nearly everything, the price of things goes up. Did you ever wonder why a ticket to an event is so expensive? Yes – Third Party Indemnity in case some idiot scratches themselves.
I have, in my time has my slips bumps and falls. It would never even occur to me to seek any kind of compensation. I should have looked where I was going, or maybe I shouldn’t have had that last pint. It didn’t matter. I was grown up enough to take responsibility for my own actions and the consequences thereof.
Maybe it is time once again for people to be responsible for their own actions?
