Going bananas
Herself likes the occasional banana sandwich.
That’s fine. One sandwich takes about half a banana so I tend to have the other half. I used to mash the banana but that got a bit tedious so I slice it instead.
I usually buy six or seven at a time. I discovered that keeping them in the refrigerator is a grand way of extending their lifespan and even if the skin starts to go black the core is still fine.
So much for that.
I do nearly all my grocery shopping online. I do buy quite a bit in the village but the main bulk is from one or two grocery chains that do deliveries. Last week I discovered that another grocery chain had joined the fray so I decided to give them a try. I signed up.
I was impressed by their site. It takes a bit more work as the range is vast and it’s quite difficult to find specific items. Their whiskey is a good bit cheaper! Hah! I searched for bananas and got three entries – a bag of bananas, individual bananas and a branded bag. Both bags looked like they would over supply us so I ordered seven individual bananas. as I do with the other two companies.
All went well. A very pleasant chap arrived within the appointed time slot and lugged all the crates into the kitchen. He even helped me unload the crates. Grand. I was impressed.
After he had departed and after I retrieved Penny after she had wandered up the lane I started on the job of putting everything away.
Then I found the bananas.
Some twat had mis-read my order. I now had seven large bags of bananas. Even worse, I realised we didn’t need them as I alredy had a good stock in the refrigerator.
I don’t like waste. I knew I couldn’t get through that lot without a lot going bad. The neighbours are now well supplied.
I also bartered three bags in exchange for a nail clipping for Penny.
Daughter is a sucker for a bargain.
Can bananas be frozen? The resultant mush would be good for sarnies
Can bananas be fermented? And the resultant mash distilled?
Do you have a nearby corner that noisy motorcyclists whizz round?
Dooners, yes, bananas can be frozen, and if you can whip them up straight from the freezer, they’re fantastic as a sort of ice cream – according to a daughter…
And yes, bananans can be fermented, and are an ideal way to make a sweet full-bodoed alcohol addition to some awful acidic stuff you’ve made and really want to chuck away!
As for motorbikes, that’s a new one on me, but well worth a try!
Grandad, I nevero knew that they survived for longer in the fridge! I found that cucumbers are better left in the room though!
I noticed that Walmart wraps plastic film around the stems of hands of bananas. Apparently it works as the bananas gas off ethylene through the stem and this provokes ripening. Wrapping the stems, individually better, slows down the process.
