Effin weird
There are times I think we have moved through the looking glass into a world of surreality.
What used to be normal is now strange and what used to be strange is now the norm.
I came across a small article yesterday which quite frankly I do not understand – Teetotallers refused lemonade in Effin pub.
So a bloke brings his elderly parents into a [grotty looking] pub and asks for soft drinks. The woman behind the bar for whatever reason doesn’t serve them. She didn’t refuse them nor did she bar them. She just made some excuse and that should have been the end of it.
In my world of normality, a bar owner is entitled to refuse anyone a drink for any reason or no reason at all. It’s his premises and if he wants to lose custom then that’s his privilege. In the past I have been refused service in many a bar for various reasons. Each time I shrugged and just moved on to the next bar. No problem.
Our three little ageing snowflakes however were apparently “embarrassed” by the incident. They could have laughed it off, but they decided to be embarrassed.
âI nearly went down through the ground. My mother and father donât bother with pubs.â
So he brings his parents, who don’t bother with pubs into a pub. Genius! But he then goes down through the ground? Why? What the fuck is wrong with the little snowflake?
Anyhows he goes marching off to his solicitor.
Now any solicitor in his right mind would tell them to grow a pair and fuck off back home, but this little laddie decides to go to court.
Now any judge in his right mind would tell them to grow a pair and fuck off and stop wasting the court’s time, but this is Looking Glass World so the judge tries the case.
So we hear how the pub is badly run [which isn’t against the law? Yet?] and how Mammy “nearly had a heart attack”. If her heart was that fucking feeble maybe she shouldn’t have been out and about in the firstplace? We hear how Daddy had never been in that pub before which apparently was some kind of “evidence”?
âTheir feelings have been hurt and they are entitled to some redress,â said Mr Linehan, who added that in a similar case at a recent tribunal a Chinese Restaurant was ordered to pay â¬2,500.
Ah! So their feelings had been hurt? Poor little preciouses. How awful for them. But what’s this about â¬2,500? Could it possibly be a bit of money grasping greed? Is there any change their “embarrassment” is nicely manufactured in the hopes of â¬2,500?
Then just to underline the stupidity of the whole affair, the judge awards â¬300 each to our three snowflakes and actually pays for Junior’s flight from the UK to appear in a case he himself has brought.
I suppose he didn’t chuck the case out in case he embarrassed the plaintiffs and was scared of being sued?
Words fail.
*shaking head*
What’s wrong with the judge? No sense of morals or even decent humanity? Line the three of them up and shoot them as a warning to any other idiots choosing to be offended by reasonable behaviour and taking cash from ordinary people.
There isn’t a single ounce of common sense in the entire escapade. It really is time for the tin-foil hat.
I’ve worked in pubs for many years and know that you can refuse anyone you like as long as it’s not discrimination. For example, you can refuse an Irish man for acting a dick but not for being Irish.
I clicked through the article as I figured there must be some element to this story that does include discrimination against the elderly and you had just missed it.
Nope. No at all. Nothing in that article suggested the pub had done anything wrong and there was clearly no case at all to answer.
The only thing I can see is that the landlord admitted discrimination. I don’t know why he did this though. Maybe because he was summoned to court he thought it would go easier for him if he pled guilty rather than being convicted after a not guilty plea.
Maybe that’s how shoddy cases are handled these days. Arrest and try the person even though there are no grounds, tell them they are in deep dodoo if they try and fight it and win the case when they throw themselves at the mercy of the court.
Lesson one. If the charge is bollocks, never plead guilty
It is one of the strangest cases I have ever come across. As you say, the landlord obviously just hoped by pleading guilty to some imagined crime that it would all go away. Now he stands to have his licence renewal refused if they decide they don’t like him [or for no reason at all].
I am baffled and deeply saddened by the way the world is going.
