Two for joy
There are two magpies wandering around just outside the back door.
Am I supposed to greet them? Am I supposed to feel joyful or does that little pleasure await me?
Dammit! A third one has joined them.
Now what? What exactly does “girl” mean? Is this a forecast of my next offspring? Either gender would be a fucking miracle and land us in the Guinness Book of Records. Is a sweet young thing supposed to arrive at the door batting her eyelashes at me? Is Daughter about to call?
Superstitions can be remarkably vague at times.
I learned it as “three for a letter, four for a boy”; DuckDuckGo only finds one reference to this though. Most have three for a girl or (in the oldern days) “Three for a wedding,
Four for death”.
Anyway, take great care – they could give you a nasty peck 😉
Not if I get them first!
No Magpies here in the high desert country equates to no such worries.
Yehbut, you’ve got poisonous snakes and stuff that St Patrick saw off out of Ireland. GD’s probably safer where he is, even with the counting and potentially pecky corvids.
All Irish snakes were just banished to the Dáil where they live to this day.
