There was an explosion in Dublin yesterday.

It was nothing earth-shattering though it might have wobbled a nearby seismograph. It was in a hostel which housed the homeless and seemed to be quite full at the time with 73 other occupants. The fact that no one else was injured shows just how small the explosion was. It was basically confined to one room and the only fatality was the occupant of the room.

Now the Powers That Be described the device as a homemade IED. Presumably everyone’s thoughts turns to terrorism, especially as the victim was described as “believed to be Eastern European”. Presumably if this was a terrorist plot then the terrorist himself must have been a rank amateur. The first rule of a bomber is don’t blow yourself up, unless he was a suicide bomber in which case he succeeded spectacularly even if he would have been a tad disappointed at the outcome.

Or maybe he was just messing about with a drop of chemistry? Maybe he had a few fireworks lying around and decided to have a blast? Maybe he was trying some experiments with drugs? There again, each of these possibilities seem a little strange for a homeless bloke [though maybe not the drugs bit]?

I assume the conspiracy theorists are going to have a field day with this. Now they are going to see every stranger as a threat. I would point out to them that burning down hotels, hostels and any building destined to house immigrants is far more destructive that a little bang that confines itself to one room?

I presume we will never know what yer man was thinking when he did whatever it was that he did.

The only witness went and killed himself.
