Catch up
Today is one of those catch up days.
There is a lot to be done on the day to day running of The Manor.
There is looking after Herself of course. Then there is the regular mopping up after the dog and slinging her shit out the door. Meals have to be arranged which usually involves having to remember to take stuff out of the freezer so that I don’t have to try to cook a solid lump of ice. Washing has to be done, involving both clothes and dishes. Stuff has to be sorted and stuffed into overflowing bins. A thousand and one jobs.
I’m not complaining. I am happy with my lot. The cards have been dealt and I am quite happy to play them. There wouldn’t be much point in complaining anyway.
The problem is that some jobs get skipped for various reasons. For example there is a huge pile of clothes and bedding to be washed. I just hadn’t bothered as I had other shit to deal with. Or else I forgot. Or else I couldn’t be bothered.
Now The Manor is in a bit of a state. So today I am stuck with one of my catch up days. The washing machine is churning, clicking and sloshing its way through the first of a couple of washes. There is a mountain of stuff to be cleared off the floor and various surfaces. The Christmas tree is boxed [the convenience of modern technology!] but I have to find somewhere to put it. The washing up has to be done. Dry clothes have to be sorted and put away. The dog has to be fed.
On top of all that, Herself wants some stuff from the village and anyway I feel I deserve a break and a quiet mug of coffee.
Fuck it.
The work can wait.
There’s always tomorrow?
That is what tomorrow was designed for, you have a cushion every day if needed. I make use of tomorrow at least three times a week.
That is indeed a logical point. I often wondered what it was for. I shall make use of it far more often.
As I mature I find that I am much less demanding of myself than those I used to supervise. I am more open and conciliatory with my excuses for failed deadlines on projects like painting, lawn mowing etc. I’ve found a more tender side to my personality and I must say I like how the new me treats me.
I had a startling experience this morning. Last week I ordered some medical supplies. I have used the company almost on a monthly basis for a long time and they are unusually prompt with the delivery. Last week’s order however failed to arrive. I sent them a brief email, not expecting a reply for a few days at least. Within an hour I got a phonecall from the company, apologising for the delay and explaining it was down to a problem with supplies. The promptness of the response left me speechless as I am so used to the normal Irish business tardiness.
It must have been a day for it. I was struck down by the flu from new years eve until Tuesday. It was strangely nice to just plow through all the mounting cleaning and washing. It was a nice way of saying Slán to 2023 in a way. But on the other hand, bring on our robot overlords so they can do all this crap. Especially putting away the Christmas tree. It doesn’t feel like long enough since all this stuff happened last year. I hated putting it all away then as well. Any chance we could skip Christmas this year?
By the way, your site is loding slower than an old Windows laptop running on spinning disks. 🙂
We do what might be called a minimalistic Christmas with just enough decorating to satisfy the Grandkids if they call [which they didn’t], so I switch off the lights – no need to remove them – they’ve been there for years but nobody can see them if they’re off, and pack the tree. My on;y problem now is where to put the packed tree.
The site load is a mystery. According to tests it is fast – 907 milliseconds in Gtmetrix and 726 milliseconds in Pingdom. Both tests are done on London servers so it theoretically should be faster for us as the server is local. However I find it very slow to load too, but I think I bypass caching as I’m permanently logged in as admin. Weird
