A sign of the times
I went down to the village yesterday.
For once it was very pleasant and quite warm. It was deal weather to sit in the sun outside the coffee shop and enjoy people watching as I sip my coffee and puff on the pipe.
A family came in. Two adults and a child. I would guess the adults were in their late thirties and the wee girl around ten. I’m not very good at guessing ages. They grabbed a table in the shade and sat down.
Immediately they all whipped out their mobile phones.
Without a word, the three of them just sat there, each silently staring at their little bits of plastic and metal.
A beautiful day in a scenic location. Yet they choose to sit and do something they could do at home on a miserable wet day.
I felt sorry for them.
I expect you have seen this video by Gary Turk but I am (hopefully) sending it in case you haven’t, it sums up the mobile phone culture so accurately, no wonder a lot of people dislike it, a case of the truth hurts.

Keep up the good blogs, always an enjoyable read.
Hah! No, I hadn’t seen that before. I must play it for the Grandkids.
Or maybe they all have genetic speech impediments, so use their mobile phones to chat about the attractive scenery, the delightful weather, the quaint village, the slightly strange locals . . . . .
I did cross my mind that the three of them were conversing via text. They were able to speak though when the waitress arrived but only for a minute. Then they went back to staring at their screens again.
Excellent sign outside local coffee shop.
‘Anyone going to stare at their phone anywhere nice this weekend?’
That’s just bout the level of it.
