One or two of you may have noticed some occasional weirdities on this site over the last couple of days?

It was a small problem that had cropped up after some updates and it annoyed me – the Reply link wasn’t working in comments. It meant writing new comments with that irritating @someone to indicate who I was replying to.

I copied this site onto a new server. The fucking thing worked perfectly! I copied everything from the new server back here. The fucking problem was back.

The files were identical.

The databases were identical.

The servers are identical.

So why did one site work but not the other?

It’s that kind of little thing that really pisses me off. I know it’s not important but that isn’t the point. When something, no matter how small, should work but doesn’t I just have to find out why. So I sat back and thunk about it. it wasn’t the server, the files or the database so what the fuck was different?

After two days of shifting files, reloading databases, creating a couple of new test sites and generally fucking things up, it suddenly crossed my stubborn mind that there was a difference.

I use a yoke called a Content Delivery Network and this site was using it but the test site wans’t! That was the difference, but I had just overlooked it. Fuck! All that hear tearing for nothing.

I tweaked a few settings on that network and the problem is resolved. The site is a tad slower and I might work on that, but the Reply link now works.

Sometimes it’s hell being a perfectionist!
