There is one golden rule about email spam.

DO NOT REPLY.

Never.

Ever.

We are all tempted to send back replies telling them to stuff their fucking photoshop services, or their LED lights up. their fucking arses, but that is precisely what they want.

I have many email accounts running well into double if not triple figures.  The vast majority are defunct and are never used.  To a spammer they are equally useless.  Now if I reply to a spam mail [and that includes their convenient “unsubscribe” link] they know they have reached a valid and active account, and active accounts are what they trade in.  So your “unsubscribe” effort is likely to see a tenfold increase in spam, while the spammer gets richer.  And once you are marked as active, you will remain on their list forever.

Last week I got a spam email.  As usual, it was a bulk mail sent to dozens of people simultaneously.  It was the usual shit so I didn’t even bother reading it and it went straight into the bin.

However, someone on the list got a bit pissed off and replied to it.  Just to be on the safe side, they pressed “Reply to All”.  That started a nice little bit of fun which went as follows –

I was wondering, did you get my last email? Please respond back with your possible requirements so we can understand and share our estimates with you.
Looking forward to your kind response.

We are not interested.

You have successfully been removed from this mailing list.
We are sorry to see you go.

Your email violates anti spam laws. Where is your mailing address and unsubscribe button. So unprofessional. You want me to buy from you and you cannot even get the basics right.

What are you talking about? I did not offer to sell you anything? You must be confused.

The spammer must be rolling on the floor laughing.  Money in the bank, as one email collected a load of active addresses.
