Just a little update
Well, they have been and gone and done it again.
They fucked up my site!
It happened a few days ago when they decided in their infinite wisdom to release a new version of WordPress which is the engine what drives this site [and you though it was sheer talent and hard scribbling?].
I installed it and it immediately broke the engineroom. Some of the equipment Down There just didn’t work any more. Seeing as that equipment was essential, I assumed it wasn’t anything to do with the update, as they would have noticed before releasing the stuff. It had to be something else.
I found it after a lot of sweat and not a few tears. It was the little thingy that put those nice little editing buttons on the comments [and where I scribble my shit]. There was no rhyme nor reason as to why it caused a problem as it had fuck all to do with the areas that weren’t working, but there you go – I had found the culprit. I disabled it with a monkey-wrench and everything works properly, except that those little buttons are gone.
I’m a bit cheesed about that. I liked those buttons. I had a funny feeling they weren’t going to last though, as the bloke who wrote them hadn’t worked on them in years.
So then I had to go around all the sites wot I look after and not only update them but remove their buttons too.
I’m looking for a way to replace them with something similar but so far haven’t had any luck. I’ll keep trying.
In the meantime, if I want to do something in a comment like put in a link or embolden script, I have to resort to the old HTML which is tedious and a pain in the hole.
And they call that progress?

HAH!
After days of searching, I naturally found an alternative within minutes of posting this.
Fucking Sod’s Law strikes again.
There again, if I hadn’t written about it, I wouldn’t have discovered the alternative!
Enjoy!

Bugger!
It doesn’t fucking work.
Ah well…. back to the drawing board.
Is the internet owned by Bill Gates now, or what?
Only when I let him borrow it.
There is yet again something unsolicited in your inbox. (Solict? Ohhh ahhh Father!)
Ooooh no there isn’t!
[Oooooh yes there is!]
Oooooh no there isn’t!
Where is it then?
It’s behind you
(Oh no it isn’t)
…
Technology always defeats the adventurous. Oh, and the NHS and every government.
It’s a well-known fact that when you’ve finally found a program that sort-of suits your needs, and tweaked it a bit to make it even more useful … something then goes awry.
The actual saying, among older computery guys, was ‘if it isn’t broken then it doesn’t have enough features yet’
and if it goes arse over tit, then it’s a “feature”.
I think I found the change that affected your little editor buttons. To wit:
Text-Editor JavaScript API
With the addition of TinyMCE to the text widget in 4.8 comes a new JavaScript API for instantiating the editor after page load. This can be used to add an editor instance to any text area, and customize it with buttons and functions. Great for plugin authors!
That plus the fact (as you said) the original plugin author had basically abandoned the plugin is probably the culprit(s) in the this latest engine room failure.
Now, since the the quote above states you can use the new API to add an editor to any text area perhaps you could write your own little plugin for the comment field? I know you have the brains for it?
“I know you have the brains for it?” I’m glad you stuck a question mark after that. My plugin skills are somewhat limited and my Javascript skills are basic to put it mildly. It might be an interesting project to dust off rusty skills?!!
