Keeping to the cycle lane
The pain is creeping back.
Regular as clockwork.
I have a small range of pain killers and each seems to carry its own warning. Every time I ask for them at the pharmacy the chemist gives me the stern lectures. I know those lectures by heart at this stage but I stand and listen to them anyway as I know that by law she has to lecture me. The law creeps into some funny places?
I have my Morphine. This is held in the back safe of the pharmacy as it’s a Class A drug. I’m given dire warnings about not overdosing on it and also warnings that it causes constipation. Like I give a shit. Strangely enough it’s one of the least effective in my armory.
Then there is the Nurofen. This is actually my favourite as it is fairly fast acting and really does the job but it’s another that must not be taken regularly as it fucks up the lining of the stomach and can cause Ulsters. You really can’t win with these things?
One of the pain killers that doesn’t seem to panic anyone is the Panadol. It too does the job though it takes its time about working. When I wake up in the morning stone cold sober and pain-killer free the pains are only mighty [and everywhere] so in my frantic dash for relief I go to the Nurofen. Panadol is okay as a filler between other doses.
And finally there is Panadol Night. This also has dire warnings that it is more than likely to send me off to dreamland so I take it last thing with my sleeping pills. Belt and braces, as it were.
So I cycle through these during the day and that works reasonably well. Each cycle lasts about three hours before I have to delve into the next round. The only problem is that I usually can’t remember what I took last time around, but fuckit, who cares? I actually can’t remember what I took just a few minutes ago when I started this brainfart and the pain is getting worse.
I’ll have a dose of Morphine anyway.
Can’t do any harm?
The next time you have your prescription filled, you may wish to ask the pharmacist of taking Gaviscon just before, or along with the Nurofen? Although it is basically an anti reflux – for those with an hiatus hernia – It was suggested to me some years ago when on a high dose of Nurofen or Panadol, and it seemed to help. The lozenges were preferable to the liquid, in my situation. I honestly can’t imagine what you’re going through, not only worrying about yourself, but also Herself too, and sincerely hope that you do find a way back to health. Take care.
Herself is a great one for the Gaviscon so there are probably several bottles around. I must have a look, thanks.
Gaviscon is expensive. Most chemists have generic substitutes that are much cheaper.
Likewise Esomeprazole tablets – the generic version of the more expensive Nexium – are good for the stomach.
Both these were very useful when I was on two bottles of bodka a day …
“Can’t do any harm”.
I believe we all reach a point in life where we adopt this attitude (Anyway, I have.)
In my case â what further harm can it do?
