The political process uncovered
The recriminations continue unabated.
It’s nearly a week since the referendum and still the entertainment rolls on.
All the political parties [bar one which is insignificant] told us to vote yes in both ballots. They were adamant that it was a progressive move and would bring the constitution into the twenty first century.
The people voted with a resounding NO to both with a record margin that left no room for error.
So now the gubmint is ripping its own entrails apart trying to find out what went wrong. The shit continues to fly and the turds are rising to the surface. We are hearing the embarrassing little confessions as politicians scramble to blame each other for the disaster.
One little nugget is the revelation that several senior party members voted no to both papers. One admitted openly that she canvassed hard for a yes vote and spent her time explaining to constituents why a yes vote was the thing to do, before going off and voting no herself. She wasn’t the only one. It transpires that quite a few followed her example. It’s a sad state of affairs when members of the gubmint themselves admit that they didn’t believe the crap that was being touted.
It wouldn’t be too bad if it were a trivial matter like voting on the number of toilet rolls in the Dáil chambers, but this was a referendum changing the bedrock wording of the constitution.
They are a loss to explain the mess. When charged with the cynicism of holding the referendum on International Women’s Day they spluttered and made some pathetic excuses that it was just coincidence.
The minister charged with running the referendum was asked if he had published all the Attorney General’s advice he replied that he had. Just before voting day a section of the advice was leaked to the meeja where the AG stated he had strong reservations about the wording. The minister had omitted that information and therefore lied.
Another little gem is that a bunch of Senators hadn’t even voted as they had considered that attending a sports event was more important.
They had no answer when charged with the accusation that the whole exercise was just pandering to “inclusion” and “progression” to placate the modern Woke shit
And I still haven’t heard a reasonable definition of a “durable relationship” or the precise meaning of “strive”.
It may have cost us €23 million but it’s almost worth that to see them all squirm.
“It may have cost us €23 million but it’s almost worth that to see them all squirm.”
Not a problem, follow the Biden example and simply print 23 million more and call it even.
Just wait, if your lot follow our lot (the other side of the Irish pond) they will just keep repeating the whole thing until you give them the right answer!
Hold on there! We invented that trick back in the ’70s with the Nice farce.
The Socialist Federal Government tried something similar down here, to quote the official sources: “The 2023 Australian Indigenous Voice referendum was a constitutional referendum held on 14 October 2023 in which the proposed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice was rejected. Voters were asked to approve an alteration to the Australian Constitution that would recognise Indigenous Australians in the document through prescribing a body called the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice that would have been able to “make representations to the Parliament and the Executive Government of the Commonwealth on matters relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples”. The proposal was rejected nationally and by a majority in every state” 60.6% of Aussies voted NO!!
Fair play to them. “Welcome to the party, but please all stay in the kitchen”?
The main reason the referendum failed is because Aussies objected to the setting up of a special “third house” in our Federal Parliament to only deal with matters for 3.8% of the population. The details of how it would all work were kept secret by the Labour party (in government) and the radical Aboriginal activists, we were just suppose to vote yes and everything would be ok! At the end of the day even the Aboriginal population voted no, the whole concept of the Voice was cooked up by city academics & activists and was the first step in creating a separate country for Aboriginals, then claims for compensation for all of the perceived wrongs of 236 years ago.
