More green insanity
Our gubmint has come up with a scheme that has left me [almost] speechless.
There is a motorway that runs from Wexford and Rosslare Harbour up to Dublin. Naturally it runs up through Wicklow. This motorway becomes somewhat congested with commuter traffic morning and evening, particularly on the approaches to Dublin and there is the problem. Our gubmint has come up with a brilliant solution.
They are going to turn the motorway into a bus corridor!
There are one or two points here. Firstly there is no existing bus service down the motorway so this is a brand new route. The thinking obviously is that everyone who drives to Dublin will suddenly decide to take the bus instead. It doesn’t seem to occur to them that not everyone wants to go where the bus will bring them.
The southern end of this marvellous route is basically in the middle of nowhere, so for the start of the route there will be no passengers. There are no parking facilities so existing motorists are hardly going to walk the first twenty or thirty miles to the terminus to catch the bus?
In order to make this route as efficient as possible they propose to close off some existing junctions on the motorway. One of those junctions naturally is the only route into our village. If I want to drive onto the motorway I have three possible routes. There’s the main one which is a fine road which also carries our somewhat erratic bus service. This is of course the one they want to permanently close off. There are two other routes which are much longer and are frankly quite dangerous as they are narrow and twisty. Is our bus service supposed to use these? I haven’t seen any way they propose an alternative so presumably it’s just a case of tough shit.
The logic behind all this is partly to reduce congestion and partly [you’ve guessed it] for the sake of the climate. The project has all the hallmarks of that smirking idiotic cunt Eamonn Ryan, the leader of the Greens.
They also somewhat weirdly throw in the fact that it will make the motorway safer for cyclists and pedestrians. Has it crossed their minds that cyclists and pedestrians are not allowed on the motorway by law? In fact they will theoretically be attracting pedestrians onto the motorway to catch the bus. Don’t they realise that a fair proportion of passengers, when they disembark, promptly cross the road on foot? That will be fun on a motorway.
This project [if it proceeds] will cost a fortune. It will cause havoc with traffic without any significant reduction in the number of cars. It will be frankly dangerous by mixing buses and pedestrians into the existing traffic.
It is really fucking insane.
yebbut – it’ll be a nice little earner for the owners of the companies doing the work and think of the subsidies to the bus operators…
Maybe not so insane eh? 😉
