I watched a bit of the BAFTAs last night.

Basically I was just on the lookout for some reasonably decent films to “borrow”. I’m not normally one for these luvvie-fests.

I didn’t stick it for long. The whole thing was so fucking contrived. It was presented from a very empty Albert Hall with a bit of laser lighting to try to spice things up a bit. Various “celebs” came on to make their little speeches, with each entry accompanied by rapturous [canned] applause. They would make their speech peppered with little jokes and quips whereupon they would have to pause while the sound engineer put down his mug of coffee and switched on a blast of canned laughter. Then they would announce the nominees, each one accompanied by more [canned] applause. The various winners then appeared via Skype or Zoom or whatever the fuck they use these days with loads more [canned] applause. I honestly don’t know why they just didn’t present the whole thing from a small studio somewhere.

One thing I did notice in the brief segment that I did see and that was how well “People of Colour” [i.e. Black, which scientifically speaking isn’t a colour] are doing and are suddenly reaching the peak of their game. There also seemed to be quite a large portion of people of the female persuasion? The PC Police should be very happy?

I looked in at the very end for the only three awards I was interested in – Best Actor and Best Actress [though should that not have been Best Acting Person and Best Acting Person?] and of course Best Film.

Best Actor? Anthony Hopkins. I have no argument there.

Best Actress? Frances McDormand. No arguments here either.

Best Film? Nomadland. Excellent!

But I had already “borrowed” it.
