The Great Storm of July 10th 1968 in Cheddar — 17 Comments

  1. One thing about that night – it cured me of any fear of thunderstorms. Anything I’ve seen since has been a very damp squib by comparison.

My one regret is that I didn’t take more photos. I know there were some but they got lost. The said Peter Pilkington developed them for me back in Dublin, and he forgot to give me back the negatives.

  2. Good story and thanks for sharing it. I would have been thirteen then and I do have good memories of the summer of 1968. I guess the big rain didn’t afffect my life much as I’ve no recollections of it in Dublin.

  3. Funny, but one of the things I remember very well was “Jumping Jack Flash” [Rolling Stones] being played very loudly all the time in the chipper opposite where we were staying!!

  4. Grandad,

Don’t let Grannymar fool you with that “Was I Alive then” stuff.

She and I were waitresses at the Last Supper.

  5. Yeah so that comment I wrote yesterday was meant to be for this one. I don’t know how I did that. It was pre-emptive. Clairvoyant even.

  6. I was bon on July 10th 1968, I was 2 weeks overdue and the storm sent my mother into labour. She’s hated storms ever since (and me apparently).

  7. Happy Birthday Redshell!!! 🙂

Good God! That storm was 39 years ago today. How come I remember it so well, but I can’t remember what I had for breakfast?

  8. I know this is an old post but i googled to see if anyone else rememberd this lightning storm. I recall hiding under the table,i was about7 at the time on holiday in Portrane.Very scary !

  9. Hi all

I wonder if you can help

I’m researching the 1968 Cheddar flood – specifically the extent to which the farmland below Winchester farm was affected if at all. Do you know where I might be able to find further information?

    Many thanks

    Jules

    • I'm afraid I can't help you there, Julian.  Al I remember about the aftermath was that all my time was spent in the clean-up operation up in the Gorge!

Maybe someone else may be able to help?
