Ice bucket my arse — 17 Comments

  1. Once challenged by someone you have a chioce of donating $20 to ALS research and dumping cold water on yourself or donating $100 and no ice water is involved.  Apparently some ALS research charity has garnered millions of dollars through this silly campaign.  ALS is also known as Lou Gehrig disease.

  2. Forgive me if I'm mistaken but the last time I checked you didn't have dunk a bucket of cold water over yourself in order to donate to a charity.

Fucking tossers the lot of 'em.

    • That's what I thought.  It's just a matter of donating the readies without any need to get soaked/shaved/whateverthefuck.

  3. The problem, GD, is that we are from another generation, where it was sufficient to say: "Look at these photos of these poor Biafran kids suffering from malnutrician. Please donate."

And we would donate, or not, according to our inclinations.

However, these days when there are so many faux charities jumping in the pond, to be heard above the background noise (and to attract money), they must do something 'different'. Hence the idiocy of pouring ice cold water over yourself.

Mind you, on the upside, there are a few good clips on youtube of total fails, like the one where they drop the bucket and almost decapitate the prospetcive donor.

Every cloud has a silver lining.

    • Sadly what we are now witnessing is the true nature of the Twitter Generation.  Nothing is real unless it appears on Twitter or Farcebook.

      *sigh*

  4. And one youth took things too far. Seems he was attempting to tombstone into a disused quarry, presumably to up the anti. The air temperature was about 14 c on that day.

Otherwise wholly agree save for, Salmond and Darling (we've been subjected to the pair of them wittering away loudly for and against "independence" in their so called debates). They deserved a thorough soaking.

    • I have heard of a couple of incidences all right.  There was another where a girl brained herself after being drenched.  I suppose it all goes to prove Darwin's Theories?

  5. I agree that one doesn’t need to do anything to donate to a worthy cause, my understanding (admittedly told by someone else not personally researched) of why a bucket of ice water is used in this case is to raise awareness of what ALS does to people, supposedly because the cold water induces the same symptoms that an ALS sufferer has on a daily basis ie numbness, pins and needles and reduced sensation.

Still not planning on doing it though, think I will stick to giving money to St Francis Hospice and donating blood instead of wasting good drinking water and paying a donation which winds up as 11% being used for research 14% for specialist nurses and the rest paying for salaries and fundraising.

    • Now that actually makes a lot of sense.  It's a hell of a pity people don't explain that before making idiots of themselves.  I might even have taken a slightly more lenient view.  Or maybe not.

  6. This ice bucketry is a passing, lucrative fad. Fads come and go. In my short trousers days it was marbles and conkers and yo-yos. In my teens it was the hoola hoop. Among young women in the 1960s it was miniskirts. In the fashion field women's hemlines have gone up and down like barometer quicksilver. Among men in the 1970s it was fashionable to let hair grow down to the shoulders.

Be a nonconformist and just do your own thing.

  7. I'm just waiting for someone to "challenge" me… They will get told where to go, in no uncertain terms. I only support two charities: the RNLI and the local Air Ambulance. Both of these organisations prefer to be independant of government funding (which covers just about all the other so called "charities"). Every time I look into the background of one of these parasites, the usual merry-go-round of "Third Sector" i.e "Government" funding, and highly paid executives rears its ugly head.

As for ALS – have a look at this post by James Higham:

Over 50% of what the ALS Association receives appears to support salaries of people working for the Association, based on these tax returns
